This is where the myth that 'laminated sounds dead or useless' comes from: since they are glued layers, they vibrate less freely than solid wood, and in a low-end, poorly made guitar, that can indeed sound flat or very bad.
However, lumping all laminated tops into the same category is unfair.
The truth about each
Solid wood vibrates more freely: it projects more, has more body, and best of all, it matures with age – the more you play it, the better it sounds. Its downside: it's more sensitive to knocks and humidity; you have to take care of it. Laminated projects a little less and doesn't mature in the same way, but it's much more resistant to heavy use, climate changes, and hard knocks. That's why many stage guitars are intentionally laminated: they can take a beating.
Which one is right for you?
If you're going to record, have a bigger budget, or want the richest sound and a guitar that 'vibrates more' and grows with you, definitely go for solid. If it's your first 12-string, or if you're going to be hauling it around in your truck, for daily gigs, and performances, a good laminated one will give you fewer headaches.
